This wikispace is designed for the purpose of a study into the reading and writing fluency of a preparatory grade student; the aim being to determine the level of fluency the child studied possesses. To achieve this, a variety of learning tools were used to engage with the child, and to then interpret his reading and writing patterns. Part B of the study is focussed on the reading and writing practices of the children in a split, preparatory/ grade one class, located within a rural school in the south west of Victoria, observations for this class was undertaken in the morning during a literacy block.
Josh*, whose name was changed for the purpose of this study, is a five year old boy who lives with both his parents, and younger brother (aged two) in the south west of Victoria, next door to his grandparent’s dairy farm. Josh’s family only recently moved into the area, having previously lived in Geelong; where he attended kindergarten with his cousin. Josh’s parents decided this move would enable him to grow up in a more stable and wholesome environment than that of the area they previously resided. He comes from a low to middle class background, and receives a large amount of attention from both his parents, grandparents and extended family who often visit. Josh is keen to learn and often asks how things work, and if he can join in the activities being carried out by the adults around him.
